DOUGLAS COUNTY SHERIFF’S POSSE

SPONSORS $1500 SCHOLARSHIP

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse began its scholarship program in 1999 by awarding a $1000 scholarship to a young lady on her way to Colorado State University to study equine veterinary medicine. Since that time the Posse has increased the amount of its annual scholarship to $1500 and, to date, has awarded a total of $19,000. Our scholarship recipients have continued their education at colleges across the country including Columbia College, Notre Dame, UC Davis, Brigham Young University, Mississippi State, our own University of Nevada at Reno, and others. Through diligent fundraising activities by the Posse membership and generous contributions by the community we have been able to continue this worthwhile program and provide additional scholarships to past recipients.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse has completed another successful year of community involvement and horse related training and activities. The local community has generously supported our fundraisers; allowing us, for the twelfth year, to offer a scholarship in the amount of $1500.

Applicants for the scholarship must be high school seniors or home schooled students who plan to attend an accredited college in the fall of 2010. The applicant must have at least an overall 3.0 GPA and plan to pursue an education in agriculture, animal science, or criminal justice. Preference will be given to Posse members or their children and Douglas County residents. Applications can be obtained at Douglas High School, George Whittell High School or here at our website. The deadline for scholarship submittal is February 26, 2010.

The Posse has been active this past year assisting Project Santa Claus, the Carson Valley Food Closet, the DARE Program, the Muscular Dystrophy Camp, and many others. One of our most successful events was the horse, tack, and trailer sale in the spring of 2009. In March 2010, we will sponsor the “Spring Equine Clinic” which will again include the horse, tack, and trailer sale.
